The Garden of Happiness Story Summary

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PuFVeKuU0s

The story is a realistic fiction story that follows a Spanish speaking girl named Marisol who lives in New York City, USA.

Marisol lives on a block near East Houston Street which has an empty lot which is full of garbage.

One day, Marisol sees several neighbors, such as Mr. Oritz and Mrs. Washington, cleaning it.

Afterwards, Mrs. Washington and other neighbors, mention wanting to plant vegetables in the lot.

The neighbors start thinking about which vegetables and flowers to plant in the new "Garden of Happiness."

Marisol wanted to find a patch of earth in the lot to plant her own flower or vegetables.

She found one that was the size of her hand, and then saw some teenagers painting a mural.

Marisol looked for some seedlings for a while, and found a big fat seed near Mrs. Garcia.

She planted the seed in her small patch, and gave it a lot of water.

It started to grow into a green shoot so she watered it and pulled the weeds near it while it grew.

Later, the plant turned into a large sunflower with petals of yellow and gold.

It was so beautiful that it even reminded Mrs. Majewska of the flower fields of Poland.

The flower of sunshine made people in the neighborhood smile all summer long.

However, it got colder in New York City and the sunflower's golden petals curled and faded.

The sunflower's vines started to tumble down as winter approached.

Marisol then collected the seeds and put them into her pockets.

She was sad during the winter as she loved her flower so much.

However, the mural that the teenagers made was of beautiful golden sunflowers like hers.

That made her happy again.
