The Abenaki are a group of Native Americans.

They were the first peoples to inhabit North America and have lived there for thousands of years.

The Abenaki lived in New England and Quebec, Canada, and still live there now.

Abenaki means "Dawn Land Place". Dawn is the time when the sun rises.

They live in houses called wigwams. The word "wigwam" means house.

The poles in these houses are covered with the bark of birch trees.

The Abenaki were hunters, fishers, and farmers.

Like many other Native Americans, they grew crops such as beans, corn, and squash.

They also used deerskin for clothing.

Although they now live in modern homes, they still have big celebrations called powows, and they still follow three major traditional customs.

Those customs are storytelling, using healing plants, and singing traditional songs.

One traditional Abenaki story is about a golden-haired woman who turns into the first corn plant.

Other stories include ones that teach children to be respectful and to help old people.

The Abenkai people have been using pine needle tea to cure sore throats and colds.

One of there most famous traditional song is the "Green Corn Song "that is sung during the harvest.

Like many other native American groups, the Abenaki often play drums during songs.

The culture of the Abenaki people remind them to respect nature and their history.
